How to change the COM Port number in Windows?

Hi all.. When we insert a Pen drive or Modem, there will be a port associated with the each device in the Device Manager in the Windows Operating System. Some times we may want to change the COM Port of a particular device for some purpose.
So here is the procedure to change the COM Port of a particular device in the Windows XP based systems.
  • Insert the device to the usb port. After successfully inserting the device open the properties dialog by right clicking on the My Computer, then click on Hardware tab, then click Device Manager and then Ports (COM & LPT).
My Computer (Right click) > Properties > Hardware (tab) > Device Manager > Ports (COM & LPT)
  • Then double click (or Right click then Properties) on the device name i.e. brand name of the product. You will get a dialog, goto Port Settings tab in that dialog, then click on Advanced.. button
  • A new dialog with COM Port Number drop down will appear, change the port number you want. You might get a warning message about whether you wish to continue, Click on Yes
  • Then Click OK to close the dialog. And close Device Manager dialog window.
  • Now Remove your device safely and Connect it to system again, then See the Device Manager Ports to view the changed COM Port.
